This machine has a 27 foot diameter platen. The platen floats on a layer of compressed oil and is held center and level with control systems. It cost $10,000,000.
The Hale 200" telescope used oil flotation bearings to support its 520 ton moving mass. It is said placing a 5 pound weight on one of the arms could move the telescope when the pumps were running.
